There have been some huge changes in my life over the past year, but the most wonderful, most unexpected was landing a job I had long given up on. Last summer, one week before the beginning of the school year I was hired as a para educator in my dream school district. It literally has been a dream come true! Even though it has been a tremendous amount of work, my role this year doesn't even begin to prepare me for my student teaching experience next fall! Yes, next December if everything goes well I will finally and officially be a certified teacher. My story is a long one, but the short version is I graduated with my degree in middle childhood education nearly ten years ago and tried to run from my calling of being a teacher. Well, it finally came full circle and I love it even more than I thought I would.

With all of this being said, I had to make a difficult decision and finally made it over the holidays. My business is closed. There is just no way that I can continue to put the time and commitment into that of business owner while giving 100% as a teacher. Over the past few weeks, I have been finishing up my customer quilts and am looking forward to (hopefully) working on my own projects - I should say, I am really looking forward to this! While it was fun to see my patterns come to fruition and it's really fun to still receive royalty checks - :) - there are so many other quilter's patterns I would like to make. It will also be fun to not have to think about the design process and worry about the customer's reactions to my machine quilting.

Are you still with me? I hope so, because I'm about ready to make yet another announcement ... I have decided to keep my blog up and running and want to begin blogging again, but with a broader purpose! I am so lucky that my mom and I are best friends and we're hoping to make this blog a collaborative project so you'll be seeing more because there's two of us! We love to eat good food and are finding with our schedules, we're not eating the kind of food we want to be eating. So, one of the things we want to start incorporating is more recipes and tips-and-tricks for busy, on-the-go people who still want to eat well. A goal of ours is to have better photography ... I am such a homebody, it's pathetic! We absolutely love where we live - Gettysburg, PA - and would love to share more with you about the region and why we love this place! So, hopefully there are coming attractions, we're going to try our best to share with you!

Finally, a good friend of mine has a life motto, "If it's not fun, I'm not doing it!" A great life motto and one that will hopefully come out through in our future blog posts!

Thanks to all of you who have stuck it out with me!

Hugs,
I'm so frustrated with myself for not being more on top of blogging! BUT the good news is as long as I can work in the time to actually write the post I have lots of good stuff to share as I've been saving it all up :)

Last summer I began volunteering my longarm quilting services to Quilts of Valor. I have been doing approximately two quilts each month. It's been a lot of fun and has given me a chance to try out a lot of different quilting styles. Many of the quilts I freehanded with my machine, but the two I'm going to share today show two pantographs I bought specifically to use on Quilts of Valor.
The above photo shows the pant laid out on my longarm quilting machine. The thread I used was by Superior Threads and is from the Magnifico line (one of my favorites!).

Ok, so now you know the truth about me ... I am a total dork ;) I was pretty pleased with myself when I came up with that joke, lol!

You may have noticed we haven't been around for quite a while, and boy have we missed blogging. BUT other than a whole lot of pictures of boxes and us moving things around, there hasn't been a whole lot to share.

Now though we're getting back up and running and we are SO excited to get back into somewhat of a routine which for us includes blogging.

As I continue to get things more organized there are projects we've finished and are looking forward to sharing. Now that we're more settled we're working to establish the longarm quilting side of our business and are looking forward to doing more of that.

Some exciting news includes that this summer we'll be hosting our first Quilt-A-Long based on a pattern from the fabulous Judi Madsen's (aka the Green Fairy) new book, Quilting Wide Open Spaces. The Quilt-A-Long will be a longarm quilter's QAL, won't that be fun?!? The pattern I've chosen is definitely going to stretch our skills and hopefully yours as well! Be sure to check back for more details! AND I have to THANK Judi for giving me her blessing for moving forward with this project - Thank you for your support! If you haven't purchased Judi's book, you can buy one from her site signed - HERE! It is an AMAZING book for us longarm quilters and freemotion quilters, I've already used some of her suggestions to improve my quilting! PS You will be required to buy the book if you take part in the QAL.

I've been blessed to continue working at A Touch of Thread in Ohio one weekend a month. There, I teach longarm quilting to beginners - those wishing to rent time on the machines and I lead the Saturday longarm quilt guild. If you're in the area - Zanesville, Ohio - we'd love for you to come and see what our group is all about. If you'd like more information, please email me at megan@cherryvalleydesigns.com

Enough talking, here are some pictures ...

This is my Work In Progress ... I was going to use metallic thread for the first time on a customer quilt and obviously didn't want her quilt to be my practice piece. So, I was going to just practice on the muslin, but then got this idea to make something and so one thing turned into another and now I have three spools of Superior's kimono silk thread to use as filler in the background and these fun paints and paintstiks to finish my "practice piece."

One of the great things about our new house is that we now have a dedicated studio space (more on that to come)! A few weeks ago we got our sofa and chair where we can relax in between projects but more often then not you'll find my boy Max enjoying the sofa ... specifically keeping watch of everything happening on our street ...
Today I'm sharing a quilt I finished up this week that I will be teaching at A Touch of Thread in Zanesville, Ohio during October. The quilt is now hanging there and is the pattern, "Afternoon Delight" by Elisa's Backporch Design. I was surprised at how quickly the quilt came together - I got it pieced in one day! - and love the fall colors to it.
This was the first quilt she has EVER made, can you believe it?! This is a variation on my Jolly Holly quilt and she made it last year when I taught the class at A Touch of Thread.

I took over my sampler quilt (I'll share more about this next week) and she picked out the designs she wanted. She decided she wanted snowflakes in the outer border, vines in the inner border, overall meandering in the body of the quilt, and stitch-in-the-ditch around the snowflakes with tight meandering in the white background.
A few weeks ago I started working at A Touch of Thread one day a week to help out and have had the opportunity to "test drive" the Ellisimo by Baby Lock. Wow! All I can say is now I know how people feel who drive cadillacs ... LOL :) Anyways, I decided to make a matching pillowcase to go with this quilt and try out machine embroidery - something I've never tried. It was a lot of fun and a nice surprise for Rose.
For all of you who are still "on board" with our blog, we appreciate your patience. This has been a summer we did not expect at all! You know the saying, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans?" Well, let's just say God has been doing a lot of laughing, because nothing has gone according to our plan. The good news is things are working out better than we could have imagined and I guess that's the whole point, right?

So, here goes the story ...

We listed our house in March and were told there should be absolutely no problem selling our house. We had been wanting to move since last fall ... yes, one year ago! ... and had waited, because the realtor said the housing market drops off in the winter. Ok, we're patient, we can wait we thought. We've had very, very few people look at our house and kept traveling back and forth from our current home in Newark, Ohio to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - a six hour trip - where we've been looking for a new house. We have had the most amazing realtor EVER. If you're looking to buy or sell a home in the Gettysburg area, I couldn't recommend Mary Hankey enough out of the Re/Max of Gettysburg office (I just had to give that shout out!). Anywho, Mary took us to one house and after that it would sell within days, literally. By July, we had just given up and felt like nothing was going to work.

However, there was a house outside of town on two and a half acres that we were really in love with and Mary kept us updated that it hadn't sold/didn't have a lot of interest. About three weeks ago, though, a house came up for sale in town (where we had originally wanted to live) on the same block my dad grew up on!!! :) Four houses down nonetheless!!!! Three days after that the house in the country sold! Someone walked into the realtor's office who was a family member of the current owners and said, "We're buying it!" Seriously! Now, we're really nervous, because there's only one house that truly interests us and meets our needs and it's coming into fall when the housing market slows down. So, we call Mary who tells us to contact the bank she works with and let them know our situation. Ughhh ... we really don't want to do that and this is so not going according to plan!

But!!!!! ... it worked out and our offer has officially been accepted!!!! We're moving in December which is still three months away :( but at least we have a house and can start having more of a schedule than we've been able to have just biding our time and waiting for when we could move! We still would love to sell our house, but it's not the necessity it was a week ago ;)

We are all just bursting at the seams - us, our family back in Gettysburg and our friends back there! We can't wait to move and get started with this exciting new chapter in our lives. The house we're buying is quite large, but needs some TLC and we're so looking forward to turning this house (see below) into our home!!!
We hope you are all having a wonderful week and we'll be back later this week with a beautiful quilt we quilted for a dear friend of ours!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14598375526346123504noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4183608593962491491.post-57812920128392240192013-08-26T11:26:00.000-04:002013-08-26T11:26:44.331-04:00It's National Dog Day!

A little housekeeping first, you'll notice on the left hand side instead of Google Reader we now have two new ways for you to follow our blog - since Google Reader is no longer operating :( The first is Google+ and the other is BlogLovin' Be sure to add yourself so you don't miss anything! I have "Learn Google+ on my 'To Do' list this week" BUT I do already add new blog posts to my timeline! So, I figure I'm one step in the right direction, or at least that's what I tell myself ;) How many of you have tried Google+? What are your thoughts? It seems like there isn't a day that goes by that there isn't something new in the world of social media!

Moving on I thought I'd share another quilt I worked on for Quilts of Valor. This quilt was done for the same guild and again was made using scrap materials from donated stashes ... what a great way to use those fabrics when we're "cleaning shop." For this quilt, I just did an overall swirl design with outlined stars interspersed. I probably would do tighter swirls on other projects and use them more as a filler, but I wanted this quilt to be comfy and not stiff from having used a tight design. The sizing and spacing worked out perfectly and gave me a chance to practice my swirls!

Onto Finished Friday ... At the beginning of July I signed up as a Quilts of Valor volunteer longarm quilter. I was quickly connected with someone living in the same town as me. Funny thing is that she also used to work with my parents, what a small world! She said the closest person she had ever quilt for her was about an hour and a half away. Well, no more! She gave me two quilts that her quilt guild worked on putting together.

They are scrappy quilts and were a lot of fun to work on and practice some new designs, mainly the echoed feather border. I have been terrified of echoing, but it ended up not being so bad. You'll also notice that I put little stars scattered throughout the feathers just for fun.

Less talk, more pictures ...
Today I wanted to show you the finished quilt from last week's "Life's A Charm" series. You can click here to read more.

I did an easy all over block design on this quilt which was a lot of fun, it was a new design for me and it doesn't take away from the busyness of the quilt. However, for the binding I wanted to try a new technique I learned a couple of weeks ago and thought I'd pass the tutorial on to all of you. I learned about this a few weeks ago at a machine quilting guild I belong to. With this technique, you put the entire binding on by machine. While I'm sure many of you know about this, for those of you who don't I hope this helps a bit.

First, make your binding the way you normally would. Mine is 2 1/2" wide and I fold it in half and then press. A little trick is to use an old coffee can and put it in while you're ironing, that way it doesn't fall all over the floor and you can just pull it out easily as you're stitching it down. This has been a lifesaver for me.

Once your binding is prepared, attach your binding like you normally would with the raw edge of the binding matched to the raw edge of the quilt, but make sure you sew it to the back of the quilt.

Then ... you need to cut off the excess at the beginning and end of your binding on the diagonal and do the final sew down.

A tip of mine is to take a picture of positioning the ends correctly, taking a picture, printing it and keeping it at my sewing machine. This way, when it's time to do this, you have an easy reference. I was always getting mixed up and ended up twisting all my ends every which way. Now I have a nice visual to clue me in ... no more frustrations!

Finally, pull the front of your binding around to the front (make sure your top thread matches your binding!) and stitch down with the blind stitch.

This was the first time I've tried it myself and it went pretty smoothly with the exception that my machine doesn't allow a stitch to have a mirror image. So when I used the blind hem stitch I had to push the whole body of my quilt into the machine so the stitch was facing the right way.

For all of our US friends, we hope you had a wonderful 4th of July weekend. This would be the reason why we're a little late in getting our Life's a Charm out, along with the fact that I've been sick the past few days and have been operating at a slower speed. Did you do anything fun to celebrate? We visited Gettysburg and I cooked a big meal for our family - marinated and grilled chicken; cole slaw; potato salad; and of course, homemade cherry pie! It was so much fun to cook a big meal like that, I don't get to do that nearly enough!

For this month's Life's a Charm we decided to make a quilt (imagine that! ... our first for "Life's a Charm"), something easy that could come together in a snap. We've had 16 fat quarters of 30's reproduction fabric sitting around in our stash for a long time and decided it was high time to do something with it. So, I cut it up into 5" charm squares and got 192 squares. We ended up using most of these squares for this lap quilt.

For those of you making charm squares out of a fat quarter, it is very easy to do. You will be able to get 3 rows vertically and 4 rows horizontally giving you 12 charm squares.

Here's how it goes ...

"X" Marks the Spot

Finished Size: 50" x 50"

Materials:
- 4 color scraps of material for 162 - 5" squares (this would be equivalent to 5 charm packs);
- 56" x 56" piece of batting;
- 56" x 56" piece of backing fabric;
- 220" of binding;
- A 6 1/2" x 24 1/2" ruler (for cutting your 5" squares out) - I prefer Creative Grids;
- A 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" ruler - again, Creative Grids; and
- A 6 1/2" square ruler - of course, Creative Grids;
- Your favorite rotary cutter, cutting mat, sewing machine, iron and ironing board!

Step 1:
Separate your color scraps and make two groups of two. So, I put purple and blue together (group 1) and pink and green together (group 2).

Step 2:
Chain piece your squares together, right sides facing, and sew a quarter inch seam allowance down one side of all your pieces. Next, sew a quarter inch seam allowance on the opposite side. Yes, that's right, just trust me on this one ;)
Step 4:
Pin your pieces back together, lining up your center point to create an hourglass block and sew together. Your will need 49 blocks of your first group and 32 blocks of your second group.

Step 6:
Iron your seams flat. Lay your quilt out starting with one color in the center and lay the alternate color around the center block. Keep alternating colors (around the world) until you have a 9 block x 9 block quilt. Sew your rows together. Your quilt top is complete!

I can't wait to get it on the longarm and get it quilted! Check back next week for how we quilted this and bound this quilt! ... There may even be a tutorial involved!
Happy First Day of Summer!

How's summer starting out for all of you? I don't think there's one season I love over another, but summer comes pretty darn close to being at the top for me! I just love the laziness of summer, the casualness of cool nights spent on the deck, get togethers with family and friends, and afterall who doesn't love a season bookended (is that a word?!) with holidays? Another thing I love is the image in my head of spending time at the beach with nothing better to do than get caught up on my reading ... definitely an image, because I haven't done this in forever! So for all of you summer lovers out there who are looking for a good book to read my mom, Penny, has put together a list of some of her recent favorite titles. I lean towards the romantic side (yes, I am a hopeless romantic, emphasis on the hopeless part!), but my mom loves mysteries ... always has and probably always will! Anyway, I'm handing the blog over to her ... Here you go!

With those crazy, lazy days of summer finally here, what better time to not only quilt but also read. Reading is another one of our favorite pastimes! Megan enjoys historical romances by Deborah Holland. She also enjoys reading Debbie Macomber and Brenda Novak books as well.

While I enjoy reading Debbie Macomber’s books, I really enjoy books by David Baldacci (did you know that the characters, King and Maxwell on TNT at 10:00 on Mondays this summer are from a number of his books?), Lisa Scottoline (so far, my favorite has been The Vendetta Defense... the story line is interesting and the characters actually make you laugh out loud at times with their shenanigans. But, my all-time favorite author is … Dorothea Benton Frank! She writes a novel once a year, usually it is published each June and they are all packed with human interest, laugh out loud humor along with interesting tidbits. Last year’s novel, Porch Lights, was focused on interesting information about Edgar Allen Poe. This year’s novel is entitled The Last Original Wife: A Novel.

Another genre of books that Megan and I enjoy are cookbooks. We enjoy reading/looking through all of the cookbooks we have. Our latest find is The Smitten Kitchen cookbook by Deb Perelman. The writing is phenomenal, pictures scrumptious and recipes make you want to jump up and cook immediately! Best of all the book lays flat which is great when trying to follow a recipe!

What books or authors do you enjoy reading? It would be great to have you share! ... PennyAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14598375526346123504noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4183608593962491491.post-19323276708493246992013-06-07T11:00:00.000-04:002013-06-07T11:00:00.630-04:00Playing Around With ColorsBelieve it or not I would definitely consider myself a novice when it comes to the Adobe suite of products. Back in November I faced the stark realization that I needed to make "the switch." Thankfully though, Adobe now has a service called Adobe Creative Cloud. It is, in a word, awesome! I was hesitant at first, but not having the $1,000+ to throw down on Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, I decided to give the Creative Cloud, a shot and I am so glad I did. I specialized in Information Systems with my business degree, so I'm pretty comfortable with the computer. I was also the "queen of handouts" (an honor bestowed upon me by my supervisor, complete with a certificate ... lol) when I was a college math tutor, so I was comfortable making graphics and writing directions. What is the Creative Cloud? You pay for it monthly and it houses pretty much the entire suite of Adobe products and then you can download the programs you need ... as many as you need! To me, $50 a month was much more reasonable than the upfront cost of the standalone Adobe products. The other huge upside is you don't have to worry about product upgrades and having to pay for those as well. The upgrades with Creative Cloud run seamlessly through your product and when one arrives, you're simply notified - it all is included with your subscription cost. Oh, and you're getting the professional grade of the Adobe products!

That turned out to be a lot more information than I was planning on saying, but if you are in need of Adobe products I would definitely recommend looking into this and seeing if this would be a good fit for you.

Like I said, I'm still definitely a novice. I do a lot of trial and error. The worst is when I get something right and I have no clue how I did it! Grrrr ... does that ever happen to you? Well, I won't forget this little trick. Last night, I was working on proofing some new pictures and I stumbled upon this photo alteration trick.

Do you remember our pattern Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend that I debuted in the spring? It's a pretty peach and spring green ...

I think sometimes it's nice to have a mindless project to just make you feel you accomplished something, at least this is true for me!

This month we simply sewed together 40 mini charms into an 8 by 5 rectangle to create a notebook cover. How simple is that! I can so see these for the beginning of school or baby shower gifts for moms-to-be to chronicle their months or just a fun way to scrapbook your family's summer adventures!

You will simply need a Mead notebook, a mini charm pack, an iron, and your sewing machine - mine broke during this project :( so don't look to closely at my stitching ;)

We cut out red, white and blue fabric from our own stash and then simply sew 8 blocks across horizontally and 5 blocks vertically.

Then fold under twice 1/8", press down and stitch a straight line to hold your edge down.

Once this is complete, simply use your notebook as a template. Iron down the top and bottom, then the sides. Pin the sides down and using a zigzag stitch, stitch along the entire top and bottom at the edge of the cover.

I thought I'd share a fun experiment my mom and I did a couple of weekends ago. After quilting this quilt I realized how patterned fabric doesn't always show the quilting done on the quilt and I was getting antsy to make my own colors. I am always enamored when I go to knitting stores with the beautiful, vibrant and scrumptious colorways yarn comes in. This is especially true of Madelinetosh yarn. Oh, my! I wish I could find these colors in fabric!

Having absolutely no dying experience in my past and not wanting to jump in with both feet, I decided to go to Hobby Lobby and get an assortment of different dyes, both brands and colors. I've heard the Procion dyes are the best to use, but I would have needed to order these. I also picked up some Elm Ash while I was there.

My mom and I put on our breathing masks - we were quite a site to be seen on a Saturday night ;) - then our gloves and got to work. While the colors are a wee bit bright, it was so fun that a batch we intended to make three swatches out of, we ended up making nine!!!

Now that I've wet my feet definitely stay tuned for more experiments to come!!! This was so much fun and I'm looking forward to trying the Procion dyes and different types of fabric!

Have you ever hand dyed your own fabrics? What did you all think if you did?
First, I have to start out by saying our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the tornadoes in Oklahoma. It just looks like total devastation and I can't even imagine what those families are going through. Stay safe!

Last week my family and I took a somewhat vacation. For a few days we spent the week back in Gettysburg and had a wonderful time, but I took no pictures :( Then we came home and just relaxed for a while. All in all it was a good week and I'm really looking forward to this Memorial Day weekend :) Always looking forward to the beginning of summer, such a fun time and just wish we were already back in Gettysburg.

Before we left I had a chance to finish up my mom's Mother's Day gift ...
... You may remember this as a work in progress from a few weeks ago.

It was absolutely a blast to do and there are so many longarm techniques that I'd never tried, like these feather wreaths ...
All in all it was an awesome quilt to long arm and ended up taking me a whopping 24 hours to complete - definitely a milestone for me, but well worth it! :) Happy Mother's Day, mom! You're the best!
I just couldn't bring myself to take the plunge and when I finally did I thought, "Wow! What's the big deal?!?" Since then I have even designed my own bag for our book Everything but Baby and today I'm sharing a purse you can put together using, of course, a charm pack! It comes together so quickly (as in, this morning!!! ... yes, that is why the post is going up a little late).

What You'll Need:

- A regular size (5" squares) charm pack
- 3/4 yard of contrasting fabric
- 18" x 58" Bosal Fusible Foam Interfacing (LOVE this stuff!)
- 2 Sew-in Snaps

Step 1: Cut 3 charm squares in quarters and 10 charm squares in half. Then lay your squares out in the order that you want to create the front, back and front pocket of your purse.

You will need two sets that look like this:

AND

One set that looks like this:

For example, this is what my back looked like when I tested my pieces before sewing:

Step 2: Next, sew your 3 panels together going across to form rows and then sew the rows together.

Step 3: After your 3 panels are sewn together, you will want to cut out your contrasting color and Bosal fusible foam. You will need 1 piece of contrasting color fabric that is 10" by 19" and 2 pieces that are 12" by 19". From the Bosal fusible foam, cut 1 piece that is 9 1/2" by 18" and 2 pieces that are 11" by 18".

Step 4: Put your contrasting color fabric that is 10" by 19" right sides together with your pocket charm piece, lining up the top of the two pieces and sew a 1/2" straight line down. Then, flip your contrasting color fabric over so your pieces are wrong sides together. Iron the contrasting color down to create a fold over and sew a straight line down in the ditch to secure your "border."

Step 5: Slide your fusible foam in between the outer pieces of your pocket and press down to fuse. Next, make a sandwich with the front and back of your purse pieces with your pieced charm pack wrong side to the fusible foam and the contrasting color wrong side together to the other side of your fusible foam. Press down to fuse.

Step 6: Next, fold the top two pieces of your pieced charm pack and contrasting color inwards towards one another. Use a pin to secure and sew 1/4" seam allowance to create a finished edge around your purse. Repeat for the back.

Step 7: Sew down the front pocket to the front of the purse all the way around the edge with the base your pocket lined up with the base of your front.

Step 8: Put your front and back right sides together and sew a 1/2" seam allowance down each side, but not the bottom!

Step 9: Finally, push your sides in about 1 1/2" on each side and sew the bottom (this will be very thick so make sure to go slowly). Turn right side out and push your puckers out on the bottom. Finish by adding your handle and voila, you have a new purse! Enjoy!
I hope your week is off to a great start! First, I have to thank all of you who stopped by on Friday and left your kind words. I also have to apologize to the first 37 people who left comments. When I leave a comment on someone's blog, it's always nice when I get a personal e-mail from the blogger thanking me ... hmmm? How do they do that? Well, midway through Friday morning, I thought, "This is ridiculous, there has to be a way!" (In the past, I have just directly replied in the comments form.) Well, for those of you who did not get an e-mail from me this is why and I want to send a special THANK YOU to all of you, sorry for the confusion!

Also, if you would like to have comments forwarded to your e-mail this is how you do it (if you have Blogger).

Step 1: Go to your Blogger home page and click the dropbox to the right of the blog you want to change the settings on. Select "Settings."

Step 2: Once on your settings page, click "Mobile and Email" on the left hand side.

Step 3: Here, under the "Comment Notification Email" type in the email you want comments sent to and click save. Now, you'll receive email notifications when you get new comments on any of your posts and this way you can send messages back to the person who left a comment (as long as they weren't 'anonymous').

I hope this helps anyone who has had this problem and makes it easier to navigate Blogger!

On to the jumbo pom pom fringe. One of the comments I got several times was about the fringe at the bottom of my wallhanging from Friday. If you missed Friday's post, click here, I participated in Madame Samm's "Shake Your Pom Poms" blog hop ... needless to say, it was a LOT of fun!

For this blog hop, one of the sponsors was Clover who wanted to promote their pom pom makers. When I first signed up for the blog hop I went to my local JoAnn's store and picked up both sizes they offer (there are 2 in each package, so I had a total of 4 pom pom makers), plus the yarn. At this point I still wasn't sure what the size of my finished project would be, so I wanted to make sure I had options! We always need options, don't we? :)

My first few pom poms didn't go so well, they were scrawny and weak ... nobody wants scrawny and weak pom poms! What to do?!? Well, the package directions show very clearly to carefully wrap a string of yarn around tightly to each other. With nothing to lose, I decided to make the pom pom by wrapping several pieces of yarn around tightly to each other (see first picture below) ... what a difference!! The pom pom was all of a sudden nice and full (see second picture below).

Then after you've cut the pieces that you just wrapped in half, tie your knot to hold the pom pom together and make sure you leave about a 6" handle on this piece, this is very important!

Next, cut a piece of 1" wide fabric by the length of your pom pom fringe. Lay your pom poms down as far away from one another as you want with your 6" handles laying over the backside of the fabric. Pin these in place and sew them down (I used a tight zig zag stitch to secure them down.)

Finally, cut the excess yarn off the top, iron down the fabric in half, and sew down with a straight stitch to create a finished look. Your pom pom fringe is ready! Enjoy!

Sometimes you need to do something just so you can jump out of the box you're in, and that's why a month or so ago when I saw this blog hop, I just had to join! It got me to thinking outside the box ... what in the world could I make using pom poms?!? Hmmmm???? I love flowers ... what flowers have large heads on them? ... what would be something as cute to make as pom poms themselves?!? DAISIES! This project was so fun to make and the brighter colors are perfect just in time for summer!

Before my reveal though I just have to thank Madame Samm for organizing these blog hops (year round, I might add!) to give all of us bloggers a chance to "strut our stuff" and the amazing Thearica of Pig Tales and Quilts who cheered us on as we get ready for this blog hop ... you did a GREAT job! Also, a very special shout out of thanks to the sponsors who helped make this blog hop possible!

Without further ado, the project ...
Amazing, right?!? I immediately pinned it to my LAQ board and then started to sleuth a bit and found the true owner of the pin was a woman named LuAnn Kessi. She has an equally amazing blog (which you can find here). She is very gracious with sharing her work and I love the fact that she gives herself little notes to remind her how she made the design that she did. The next day I went to Michaels and bought an artist's notebook (they were on sale 40% off!).

The idea of carrying around a notebook is still odd for me, but I'm getting better. Having a sketchbook to not only practice designs you want to try is important ...

... But it's also important to give dry runs to potential designs. I was working on a wallhanging yesterday and after some input from my mom, I decided not to use the design I had planned on for the past two weeks ... eeks! Well, with a deadline to get the piece done, I needed to come up with something, so I roughly sketched some ideas to get to the idea that I finally decided upon. Be sure to come back tomorrow for the "Shake Your Pom Poms" blog hop to see the final reveal!

While I am by no means as talented as LuAnn I hope seeing a peek into my sketchbook will encourage you that you don't have to be perfect. For some reason, putting pen to paper just helps get your brain wired to do the actual design when you go to the longarm. You can just work through the kinks before you actually stand at your machine to do the work!

Smothered noodles are just normally cooked noodles smothered in goodness once cooked. For our dinner, we made egg noodles and once cooked according to the directions on the package, we added 1 tablespoon of olive oil, one tablespoon of parsley and one clove of garlic. Easy as that, and you have gourmet noodles. No one ever has to know! Plus, the ideas for smothered noodles are endless, let your imagination fly!

This quilt is done in 3 Sisters' Double Chocolat line. You may remember my original from this blog post where we used Fig Trees' Tapestry line. I'm absolutely loving the way this new version is coming together and can't wait to show you the finished project ... hopefully, next Friday? I'm working on a special quilting design for it and am just itching to get it on the long arm.

Right now, there's another special project on my long arm which I can't show you, because it is having it's debut this Friday when I participate in Madame Samm's Shake Your Pom Poms blog hop. Definitely stop by this Friday to check out my finished project!

As you can see this is a big quilt and wouldn't fit on our design wall, so we have laid it underneath the long arm!
We love hearing from you!

Since Fridays seem to have been taken over by finished projects, I thought I'd turn my "Fab Five Fridays" into just plain old "Fab Five Faves" and share a few of the favorite things I've found with you today ... on a Monday!

#1: Tiramisu Gelato ... Oh my word! I have a weakness for Tiramisu and since it's not a typical dessert at restaurants it was always a treat when I'd be able to get it, but now I have the opportunity to avoid temptation every night of the week with this tiramisu gelato. Sometimes I'm able to stay strong and sometimes I'm doing extra time on my workout the next day ;) You can find this at Target, it's by their Archer Farms product line and they have other amazing flavors as well!

#2: Baby Lock Symphony ... Definitely click on the link to see pics and find out info on this amazing machine ... I can't even begin to tell you how in love with this machine we are! Last weekend, we went to an open sew day at a local quilt shop who is a Baby Lock dealer and we asked if we could use this machine while we were there. Basically, to give it a test drive. We didn't want to go back to our old machine! My list of things I love about this machine could go on and on, but to just give you a few ... it has an alert when your bobbin is low (you know, so you don't keep sewing and sewing just to find out you had no bobbin about 20 pieces ago ... like we did last night!); you don't have to sew with your foot if you don't want to, you can just hit a button; and there are little scissors so when you're done with a strip, you can just hit the scissors button and it cuts the thread for you! Seriously, we became so spoiled using this machine, it's definitely at the top of our "to buy" list! Does anyone else own a Baby Lock? What do you think of your machine?
#3: CND Spamanicure Almond Hydrating Lotion ... Love this lotion and I keep it in my Longarm room. It doesn't leave a sticky residue and really helps hydrate my dry hands. I always get the large bottle, you can find it here in our Amazon store.
#4: Rock Your Hair products ... I keep super inexpensive shampoo that I use throughout the week and then mix it up with a higher end product every few days. My go to "higher end" hair products are these products by Michael O'Rourke. They help make my hair fuller and I love the scent!
#5: Favorite quote ... Last week as I was going through my personal Facebook page, I stumbled upon this quote from Guideposts and it just struck me. I have since printed the quote and hope to frame it. How often I forget this? Do you have the same problem? Hopefully, keeping it in front of me will remind me what's really important in life!
Having been interested in the Quilts of Valor program for quite awhile, we decided to recreate the quilts in a patriotic theme. A few weeks again I taught Spin Me at A Touch of Thread and we made the quilt in a darker color scheme with burgundy, navy and cream. For the quilting, I chose to use a ribbon meandering all over with sporadic stars that were then highlighted with gold metallic thread.

In class, it was so fun to see everyone's color schemes. One lady made it using batiks and it was coming together absolutely stunningly. Two sisters who were taking the class were going with a tan background and various shades of olive green - just beautiful! I have to admit that while designing patterns is so much for me, seeing others choices may be even more fun!!

Here's how ours turned out ...
